Mental health is more than conditioning the mind. It is more than mere substance abuse, an addiction to uselessness. It is more but before I continue let me tell you a story…

I can’t say how it happened but it did….

It is that time of the year when I feel like I am total shit. For almost every student in the University, it is this time that we tend to panic a lot.

This semester has been a stressful one for me and it is hard keeping up as a straight

A+ student. I have to live up to everyone’s expectations

“Favour, your result this and your result that…” But I couldn’t!

I had absent from 3 courses I wrote last semester even though I was present for the examination, and trying to get those results back was futile because I couldn’t after all my attempt

Now I have to write them all over again! I paid too much attention to trying to recover my result that I missed almost all attendance for my new semester

It all started when I got my public relations assessment test, I had gotten 6 out of 20! That was a slap to my reputation! I was alerted and I started to mentally prepare myself for my grades.

According to my calculations, 6 in tests, 2and  in attendance, and I will probably get a 40 in that course.

I am going to have a D for the first time in my life! It is alright, I can do better, things happen, right? But I wasn’t okay!

At that moment I was fine but I never stopped thinking about how I was going to get a D in three courses! And slowly, I started to see failures all over

My hands trailed through my wavy hair in agony and I wasn’t settled. I couldn’t think and I started to pave are campus aimlessly.

“Favour, are you alright?’ I ignored her and dived outside into the late hour of the night but she ran after me.

“Oh, God! You are not okay!” She held me firm as I struggled in her hold.

I was passing out! I couldn’t breathe! I tried but it was too hard. “Breathe Favour, breathe”

“I am going to fail, Patience, I...”

“You are not going to fail! Breathe! Take two in, one, out”

Thankfully I did, I finally started breathing but my body was shaking for over an hour.

My body wasn’t listening to me anymore, so she started to tell me crazy things she did as a child and various funny things on campus and I started to laugh. I started to breathe properly, and I calmed

After I felt much better, I stared at her and asked;

“What just happened to me, Patience?”

“Favour, my dear, you just had an anxiety attack!”

You are probably asking yourself….Why did she tell me that? The truth dearie is that you needed to hear that story. It was a mental health condition and it could have killed me if my friend hadn’t been informed! This is why you need information! This shows that mental health is more than you think and the best thing to do when you find out is to recover as I did.
